Lake County, Ohio, is mourning the passing of Commissioner President Richard J. Regovich, a respected community leader whose lifelong commitment to public service shaped the region for decades. Regovich, 59, died Wednesday following a courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind an enduring legacy defined by service, family, faith and an unwavering devotion to the residents he proudly represented.
Born and raised in Willowick as one of six brothers, Richard “Rich” Regovich grew up in a working-class household that instilled discipline, gratitude and community responsibility. He attended Willoughby-Eastlake Schools before enrolling at Lakeland Community College. His roots in Willowick deepened when he married his childhood classmate and high school sweetheart, Lynn, whom he first met in the second grade. Together, they raised their two children, Brian and Lizzie, in the same city that shaped his values.
Regovich’s commitment to public service began long before he held elected office. He founded Willowick Hearts and Hammers, a volunteer initiative designed to support seniors and vulnerable residents through essential home repairs and maintenance. That effort became a hallmark of his belief in service-driven leadership and demonstrated his compassion for neighbors in need.
His rise through city government reflected both his work ethic and his steady leadership style. Regovich served on the Willowick Planning Commission, the Charter Review Committee and Willowick City Council before being elected mayor. He led the city for more than six years, earning praise for his collaborative approach, strong fiscal priorities and hands-on engagement with residents. Community members frequently recalled his presence at school events, youth sports, local festivals and church activities—efforts that highlighted his commitment to uplifting families and strengthening community bonds.
On November 29, 2022, Regovich was sworn in as Lake County’s 81st commissioner. His leadership quickly became defined by progress in economic development, infrastructure modernization, senior services and taxpayer advocacy. He supported major capital projects, including advancements related to the new county jail, and remained deeply committed to policies that reduced burdens on homeowners and enhanced resources for seniors. Even as he faced significant health challenges, colleagues admired his determination to continue serving the public. Just eight days before his passing, he presided over a commissioners meeting—a testament to his devotion to the county he loved.
Commissioner Morris Beverage III described his passing as “a tremendous loss,” adding that serving with Regovich was an honor that positively shaped his own public service. Commissioner John Plecnik emphasized his colleague’s unwavering dedication, stating, “Rich loved Lake County and cheerfully gave his last days on Earth in service to his local community. My friend Rich gave his life to Lake County. And his life made a big difference.”
In recognition of his service, flags across county buildings will fly at half-staff. Memorial service arrangements will be released as soon as they are finalized.
